Cooking Oil Recycling Program
You can now recycle your used cooking oil in Western North Carolina! Used cooking oil wasted in drains and landfills can harm sewer pipes and the environment. The cooking oil recycling program is a campaign for turning your unwanted cooking oil into clean-burning locally-made biodiesel. It’s easy! Visit www.cookingoilrecycling.org to find a recycling bin in your area. And thank you for making Asheville a little greener.
 
West Asheville Rock Academy
West Asheville's Rock Academy will be holding auditions for its Saturday afternoon and it's Thursday after school classes. They are looking for children ages 10 -17 with some musical instrument experience. RiverLink
RiverLink started a new program focusing on water management on residential lots, WaterRICH - Water Reuse, Infiltration and Conservation for the Home- to assist homeowners in understanding rainwater management and conservation techniques that will help recycle and infiltrate water right in their own yards. Montford Community Center

Montford Community Center is now hosting 1 hour Improv Comedy sessions the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of each month starting at 6:30 pm and invites all adults and children 6 years and older to come and participate in hilarious group activities in a supportive & positive environment that will send you home feeling renewed, refreshed & high on life! Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement is currently seeking volunteers for this spring’s program calendar. JA offers programs from kindergarten through 12th grade and teaches volunteers on how to utilize the user-friendly materials and work with students. Teachers work side by side with the volunteers at all times. White Horse Black Mountain

On Friday, February 17, sugar-coat your Valentine’s Day weekend with a musical showcase at White Horse Black Mountain. Doors open at 7 PM and the concert will begin at 7:30 PM starring local musicians performing original compositions and love standards. Door prizes will be announced throughout the evening, including a pearl necklace and gift certificates to local businesses. The concert will benefit Black Mountain Pastoral Care & Counseling Center. Suggested donation of $10 per person.

Percentage Day for Local Firefighter

February 18, 2012
Twenty restaurants will be participating in a "Percentage Day" benefit to raise funds for the Asheville Fallen Firefighters / Shane Mackey Fund. Area restaurants are sponsoring this event on February 16th, 17th and 18th.  A percentage of the restaurants profits will be donated to assist Capt. Shane Mackey and his family as he recovers from a blood clot on his spinal cord which on December 7th left him partially paralyzed.  Currently, he is undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at the Sheppard Center in Atlanta.

RiverLink is hosting a workshop on Residential Stormwater Management and Site Planning. The workshop will assist residents in assessing their property and creating a site plan to determine slopes and soil drainage qualities. A site analysis will help calculate the stormwater runoff volume for the property. The workshop is on Saturday, February 18th from 9a-1p or from 5:30-7p on Monday, February 20th and Wednesday, February 22nd. The Nature Conservancy's Asheville office is hosting its second Work and Learn Party at the Bat Cave Preserve in Hickory Nut Gorge. Volunteers are sought to help remove invasive species and protect the biodiversity of the preserve. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has opened registration for this year’s fundraising walk. Walk MS: Asheville is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, in Carrier Park (235 Amboy Rd). Sixty percent of all money raised will go to programs, services and advocacy for Greater Carolinas residents. The rest will support national research to find the cause and cure of MS. In addition to the approx. 3 mile walk, the event will feature a Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Village and kids’ activities. The Buncombe County School system is announcing kindergarten registration dates for all schools.  Parents of rising kindergarteners are encouraged to contact the school that their child will attend and make a registration appointment. A child must turn 5 years old on or before August 31st of the current school year in order to be eligible to enroll. Entering first graders must be 6 years old by October 16. Western North Carolina’s trusted financial education & counseling non-profit, On Track Financial, is expanding services by opening the Women’s Financial Empowerment Center.  Through women-centered education classes, individual financial counseling, and a Money Buddy program, the Women’s Financial Empowerment Center will empower women with knowledge, skills, and support to take charge of their finances.  The new programs are offered at the On-Track Financial Education and Counseling Offices at 50 South French Broad Avenue in Asheville.
